Perhaps this idea sounds good to some folks. Hoping to get some work done in the same area, I'm hoping to go down to the chutes at anglers at some point this summer and surf/flip/roll over and over again until I swim. I just want to wait until the water is warm enough that I can just wear a vest. Afterward, I'm thinking maybe the group could run down to lock 10 and hit the 3 short rapids below Anglers.

I guess I'll just post something on pick-up trips when I get a day in mind.

GPG right after the Falls road bridge is deep enough by the rocks

S-Turn on Lower GP

Last rapid on Muddy Creek

Harford Road rapid on Middle GP is almost always runnable and deep enough

However taking it the next step... Anglers and Mather Gorge are good because of the multiple directional currents

While paddling the Staircase a few weeks ago I was told about this paddling book for kids:

And, this years children's album Grammy went to the Okee Dokee Brothers' CD "Can You Canoe". Much of their music is paddling-outdoor-camping-adventure-river related.

If you are a paddling parent, it is never too early to indoctrinate the kiddies!

The beach at the Hammerman area of the Gunpowder is a good spot too.  There is always plenty of water there.  It just may get a little crowded on the weekends and there are some small waves to deal with.  We held a beginner class (flatwater portion) at the Hammerman area one summer.

The last rapid on the Gunpowder before you get to the rr bridge has decent current, a deep enough pool area/runout, and minimal hazards (generally people swimming).  Have to make sure there is enough water, but you can park at the takeout, and it would not be a particularly difficult portage/attain up.
