Class: III+

Trip Leader: Eric Ruhl

Prerequisites: Solid intermediate skills, flotation, Roll, cool weather gear. This run has lots of long contiguous rapids.

Summary: One of the first festivals in the new year.  Stony Creek has several sections with various difficulty levels and lots of really nice creeks in the area as well.  The canyon is famous for it's play spots.

http://benscreekcanoeclub.com/rendezvous/

The 2012 Annual Benscreek Canoeclub Whitewater Rendezvous will be held on May 18, 19 and 20 at Greenhouse Park, Johnstown, PA. We will have a guaranteed release from Quemahoning Reservoir for this year’s rendezvous unless the river is naturally high.

We are still plannig for this year’s Rendezvous.  But we should, again, have a downriver race  on Friday evening.  And on Saturday we will be having a flatwater race, a wild (as usual) Boater-X race and a Whitewater Rodeo.

Throughout the weekend we will have ongoing play in our Whitewater Park; opportunities to paddle the Stony Canyon on releases from the Quemahoning Reservoir (and other local rivers if Mother Nature is kind); music; boating vendors on hand to replace any broken gear; and food vendors to fuel our guests.

If you are interested in joining in on this trip please let me know.  Last year Nick and I made the trip with one vehicle and shuttle is easy and the camping is even easier.

I will be leading a trip down the canyon on Saturday.  However, I maybe there Friday to complete a run and again on Sunday.  But if the rivers in the area are up, I might jump on something different on Friday and Sunday.  If you are joining on the trip we can talk about it then.

Stony will be doing more consistent releases this year, but the festival is a lot of fun.  Where else can you play in a surf wave at 2am

I am in.   Stoney is a fun run, plus playboating until the wee hours is a nice bonus.

Not racing this year, although i did enjoy beating you last year Grin

Yea, I've noticied that Nick's roll is getting a little sloopy.  It now takes him almost 1/2 sec from the time his head hits the water until he has rolled back up.  I guess all the teaching at the roll sessions, instead of roll practicing, has slowed him down! Grin

I suppose I should learn how to roll before I try teaching a roll. That explains why I wasn't able to get anyone to roll.  I will find someone to teach me before Stony.  Will you help me Eric?

Since you have a good 8 months on my since my last swim, I may have to point out to you a special boof move on the Tohickon and see how good the roll is for you Tongue

Nick or Eric,

I see the bloomington releases listed on the calendar. Are trips scheduled for all those dates? I was hoping to run that this year, but missed a chance to go with John M. last Saturday. I have a few Sundays in April and May when I could go and May 5th is a rare open Saturday for me.Who do I contact about Bloomington trips?

Also, I can't seem to get the personal message feature to work for me online. Any advice there?

It looked like a ton of people paddled last Saturday's Bloomington release.   I suggest starting a post for the date that works for you and hope someone picks it up to lead the trip.  Maybe contact Tony Alred, he usually organizes a few trips at Bloomington.

For those interested... there is a class 2/3 section and a class 3/4 section.  If you are able to come, please post whether or not you can carpool and what day you can leave etc.

Ideally getting an early start on Friday would allow some paddling Friday on the upper section before it gets dark and they shut the water off.

John,

I do not know the final plans yet because I want to find someone to carpool with.  Ideally, I would like to get up there early afternoon on Friday which would have us leaving Baltimore around 11am and paddle the Canyon(III/IV) or something else local.  If There are people that want to do the lower section (class II/III) the shuttle can go there to.

Saturday we get an early start and either just run the canyon or add the lower section also.  Then Sunday either run something local or the canyon again.

I think we can get a couple class II/III folks to run the lower section.  It is a fairly simple read and run at the bottom with various play waves.  The take out for the canyon is the put-in for the lower section.  Therefore if its coordinated they can take the vehicle to the take out for the canyon after dropping us off and then they paddle down until they get to the campsite.
